The Lonesome Duckling - on 10th May, 2010

My wife has damaged her knee, and is having to rest and, as she's been getting a bit stir-crazy (particularly as we were supposed to have been off on a holiday to Italy today), I decided a day out in the car, enjoying the delights of the Derbyshire countryside, would do her good. We didn't see many birds, an elusive Meadow Pipit being the most exciting thing seen, but we did stop at Cauldwell's Mill to buy some flour. Here there are loads of ducks - mainly Mallard hybrids, and a few domestic ducks, and there are also many Sand Martins by the river. In the mill race there was a solitary duckling. It was clearly trying to find its mother. The only other duck to venture into this part of the water ignored it, even though the duckling seemed to be appealing to it for help. We were concerned that it would end up being dragged into the mill wheel. However, there was nothing we could do. I have no idea what sort of duckling it was - probably a Mallard hybrid. It did look awfully cute, and appealing!!
