Water Rail at Kelham Bridge on 1st February, 2010

It was bright weather, so I decided that I would pop out for a few hours to Kelham Bridge, near Ibstock. My objective was Water Rail. The walk to the first hide gave me a male Kestrel hunting over the land beside the path. Water Rail showed up within minutes of my arrival, and stayed around for about five minutes, but it never came out into the sunshine. I hung around for another hour or so, watching the birds on the feeders, but the Rail did not return. I then walked to the second hide, where four Mute Swans noticed my arrival and came over (someone has got them used to being fed!). There was a distant Snipe down by the water, but little else was seen. A most enjoyable afternoon, made more so by me finding that one of my Little Owl sites holds a pair - I hope that they produce young.
